During the interview with coach and journalist Maria Pia Beltran for PsicologicoPositivo.it in collaboration with the European Institute of Applied Positive Psychology (IEPP) for which I am a testimonial, I had the pleasure of introducing a useful and interesting topic: " Find your center with music."

Let's see what this means.

The connection between music and positive psychology is deep and fascinating, and can be told specifically through different scientific, emotional and practical aspects.

Here are some points:

1. Music and NEUROTRANSMITTERS of well-being

Music stimulates the release of dopamine , the reward hormone, which creates a feeling of pleasure and motivation.

It can increase levels of oxytocin , which is associated with trust and social connection, especially when singing or dancing together.

Listening to music in 432 Hz or music with specific frequencies (such as 528 Hz) can stimulate the production of serotonin , improving mood and reducing anxiety.

2. Music as an EMOTIONAL ANCHOR (positive)

Positive psychology encourages the use of experiences that reinforce positive emotions (gratitude, joy, wonder, love) and music is one of the most powerful and fastest channels to evoke them.

The soundtracks of life (songs linked to happy moments) work as “emotional anchors”: by listening to them again you can relive the positive mental state of that moment.

3. Music and FLOW: the optimal state of mind

Playing, singing or dancing to engaging music can induce a state of flow (Csíkszentmihályi's concept), in which one is fully immersed in the experience, with altered perception of time and full inner satisfaction.

This state is associated with maximum creativity and psychological well-being .

4. Music and EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE

Music can be used to regulate emotions : in times of stress or sadness, music helps to process emotions constructively, supporting resilience .

There's an effect known as “ shared emotion ”: songs that talk about shared experiences help people feel understood and less alone.

5. Music, body and mind: INTEGRATED WELLBEING:

Music and movement (dance, rhythmic walking) stimulate mind-body connections , which are essential for holistic well-being.

In the field of positive psychology, practices such as danced gratitude (dancing mindfully toward what you are grateful for) unite emotion, thought and body into a single harmonious experience.

6. Music as a practice of MINDFULLNESS and PRESENCE

Instrumental music, or music played live (such as Tibetan bells , shamanic drums , binaural frequencies) facilitates states of meditation and mindfulness .

This reduces stress and promotes mindfulness , which is one of the pillars of positive psychology.

7. Music and building POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS (SHARING)

Making music together, singing in a choir, attending concerts or musical events creates social connection , which is essential for well-being.

Music can become a vehicle for values such as empathy, love, peace and collaboration.

SOME USEFUL EXERCISES:

1. Gratitude Playlist

Goal : To increase the perception of beauty in one's life.

How to do :

Make a playlist of 5-10 songs that make you feel grateful (for memories, people, dreams).

Listen to it every morning or evening, and while you listen, write down 3 things you are grateful for .

Variation: Slowly dance to the playlist while imagining “thanking” each part of your body.

2. Guided Sound Journey (Meditation)

Objective : To cultivate positive visualization and relaxation.

How to do :

Choose some relaxing instrumental music (432 Hz, harp, handpan, nature).

Close your eyes and visualize a safe, happy place (e.g. a magical garden, the beach of dreams).

Imagine the details: colors, scents, emotions, sounds. Breathe slowly.

Stay there for 10 minutes and then write down the sensations you felt .

3. Dance of Joy

Objective : to stimulate the body and positive emotions (joy, freedom, energy).

How to do :

Prepare 3 energetic and engaging songs.

Let go of every thought and dance freely as if you were alone in the world.

Surprise yourself with new and creative movements.

Finally, take a deep breath and notice your energetic state : what has changed?

4. Music for Forgiveness (self and others)

Goal : To work on difficult emotions in a gentle way.

How to do :

Choose a sweet and touching song (piano, acoustic guitar, ethereal singing).

Visualize a person (even yourself) to whom you want to forgive something.

Listen to the music and mentally repeat: “I let you go with love. I am free.”

Notice if any emotions emerge and write them down .

5. Music and Empowering Affirmations

Goal : To strengthen positive thoughts and confidence.

How to do :

Choose motivating music, rhythmic but not too fast.

Write 3 affirmations (e.g. “I am light, strength and love”, “I attract beauty into my life”).

Repeat them out loud or in your head while listening to music.

Variation: Create your own audio by mixing affirmations with background music.

6. Breathing with Music

Objective : to regulate the nervous system and relax.

How to do :

Put on a slow track (60 bpm, like waves or slow drum).

Inhale 4 seconds – hold 4 – exhale 6. Follow the rhythm of the music .

Do this for 5-10 minutes to calm anxiety and stress.

Finally, write a keyword that represents your mood.

7. Tell your story with songs

Goal : Rediscover your positive narrative .

How to do :

Choose 5 moments in your life (childhood, discovery, love, challenge overcome, dream).

Associate a symbolic song with each one.

Create your own life playlist and listen to it like a personal movie .

Creative variation: draw or write a sentence that represents your story.

"WE ARE COLORS" LYRICS

Author: Dhany & Giulia Regain

I'm just a human being

riding my troubles into the world

maybe I'm dreaming

but I want to share my dreams with you

Love has no limits

love is our bridge to eternity

come closer to me

Without you I feel so incomplete

Because we are colors

waiting for the light to shine

merge together

paint new rainbows in the sky

we are colors

we are colors

we are colors

merge together

paint new rainbows in the sky

You know you can count on me

I will take care of your heart

I know we are different

but we will never be apart

No one was created to be happy alone.

come closer to me

together we build a better world

Because we are colors

waiting for the light to shine

merge together

paint new rainbows in the sky

we are colors

we are colors

we are colors

merge together

paint new rainbows in the sky
